Calendar of Events

Following is a month-by-month listing of events on the Hay Flats. Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats encourages community events on the Refuge. If your organization is sponsoring an event or has an announcement you'd like posted, please let us know so we may include it!  Forward details to Alaskans@PalmerHayFlats.org.  In the event of inclement weather, please call
357-8711 or 373-7484 to check on the status of a listed event.

Remember, as stipulated in the Refuge Management Plan, if your group event will include 20 or more persons, you must obtain a permit from ADF&G. Call (907) 267-2812 for information.

2ND ANNUAL "RUN FOR THE REFUGE"

Take part in the 5K, 10K or Kids Dash races, run this popular, natural course that winds through the woods along the Scout Ridge trail, win prizes, and help support YOUR Refuge!

ANNUAL SUMMER FAMILY FUN DAY ON REFLECTIONS LAKE

A full day of summer fun at Reflections Lake in the Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge! Canoes, kayaks, and rafts provided by Mat-Su Borough Parks & Recreation, REI and APH members/supporters. MSB Water Rescue Team diver demonstrations, retriever dog demonstrations, woodland walks along the river and around the lake, scenic overlook photo opportunities. Bring a picnic and enjoy cookies and lemonade provided by Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats. A wonderful way to spend a summer day at YOUR local Refuge!

ANNUAL GATHERING OF MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS

Begins at Noon with with a cookout, feasting and greeting (plenty to eat, but potluck dishes are always welcome)

1 pm - Business Meeting -
2010-2011 Annual Report, what's coming up – events, projects, and proposed Natural Science Center, Election of Board Members

1:30 pm - Alaska Wild Bird Rehab Center Live Bird Program

2 pm - MEMBER DRAWING Alaska Railroad Tickets for Two, and Door Prize drawings for everyone

2:30 pm - Celebrate Esprit de Corps! Conviviality! Fellowship!

All the above accompanied by sandhill cranes, waterfowl migrants and a chorus of romantic wood frogs!

Wear boots and gloves.

WINTER FAMILY FUN DAY

Come enjoy winter at scenic and accessible Reflections Lake! Cross-country ski, snowshoe, ice skate or walk the loop around the lake. Stay warm with campfires, hot beverages and tasty treats as you soak in the beauty of the picturesque spot. Learn how to use the equipment properly, as well as avalanche safety and awareness. Join us for this National Winter Trails Day event and the opportunity to try healthy winter sports.

REFLECTIONS LAKE TRAILS VOLUNTEER WORK DAY

In partnership with Alaska Department of Fish and Game, we are hosting a volunteer Trails Work Day at Reflections Lake. We will do maintenance on the trails such as clearing brush, distributing gravel and installing fencing. Pizza and beverages for lunch will be provided. If you are interested in picking up a shovel and helping out, please give us a call at 357-8711 or send an email to alaskans@palmerhayflats.org to let us know you are coming.

ANNUAL SPRING WALKABOUT

Join us for this easy, guided walk around beautiful Reflections Lake. Bring water, a camera for stunning panoramic reflections of surrounding mountains, and binoculars for songbird sightings along the path and waterfowl on the lake at this gem of a spot along the Glenn Highway. Trail is ADA accessible, with benches for resting along the way. Wear sturdy shoes.

MACHETANZ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATION FIELD DAY

A new school will join APH at a new location for this year’s educational outing at the Refuge. Students at Machetanz Elementary will learn all about the flora, fauna, resources and history that can be found at picturesque Reflections Lake by visiting learning stations set up around the lake. Stay tuned for a list of these stations.

Thanks to your participation and Alaskan spirit, we had over 325 people turn out for this year’s Winter Family Fun Day! Thank you all for coming out to enjoy your Refuge on a fine winter day – we look forward to seeing you again next year, along with all your friends and family!!
