Calendar of Events

Following is a month-by-month listing of events on the Hay Flats. Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats encourages community events on the Refuge. If your organization is sponsoring an event or has an announcement you'd like posted, please let us know so we may include it!  Forward details to Alaskans@PalmerHayFlats.org.

Remember, as stipulated in the Refuge Management Plan, if your group event will include 20 or more persons, you must obtain a permit from ADF&G. Call (907) 267-2812 for information.

Monday, May 19th

Cottonwood Creek Public Access
Annual Snowshoe Elementary School Kids Education Day

Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats once again sponsors an all day outdoor education day with a wide range of speakers and subjects to expose kids to the natural world around us. Just a few of the "learning stations" will include:  Mat-Su Borough's Native history at the old settlement site at Scout Ridge; ADF&G will be there, talking about bears and fish habits and habitat; Mat-Su Birders Club joins us for migratory and resident bird info'; Trailside
Discovery Camp, Leave No Trace, Mat-Su Fire Dept, and as always, Wasilla Soil & Water Conservation District will have fun learning projects for all the kids, and a new addition to our lineup, Alaska Wild Bird Rehab Center will bring live birds of prey.

Annual Reflections Lake Springtime Walkabout

Join wildlife biologist and master birder John Wenger for an easy, guided walk around beautiful Reflections Lake.  Bring camera for stunning panoramic reflections of surrounding mountains and binoculars for sightings of songbirds along the path and waterfowl on the lake at this gem of a spot on the Glenn Highway.  Wear sturdy shoes.

Cottonwood Creek Public Access Parking Lot
Knik Elementary School Fifth Grade Class

Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats and Wasilla Soil & Water Conservation District co-sponsor an outdoor education day at Scout Ridge and Cottonwood Creek. Activities include: learning about macroinvertebrates, forestry and salmon migrations in anadromous streams. Kids will be planting willow cuttings to enhance waterfowl habitat, learn about Native life at the old Native settlement site on Scout Ridge Trail. They will also take a wetlands hike on the Flats for some birding.

Annual Gathering of Members and Supporters

Begins at Noon following the annual Audubon bird walk with cookout, feasting and greeting (plenty to eat, but potluck dishes are always welcome)

1 pm - Business Meeting -
2007-2008 Annual Report, what's coming up – events, projects, and proposed Natural Science Center, Election of Board Members

1:30 pm - Program - Alaskan Birds of Prey
Live! Great Grey Owl, Red Tail Hawk and Northern Saw-Whet Owl

2 pm - Bird Rescue Release

2:15 pm - MEMBER DRAWING Alaska Railroad Tickets for Two, and Door Prize drawings for everyone

2:30 pm - Celebrate Esprit de Corps! Conviviality! Fellowship!

All the above accompanied by sandhill cranes, waterfowl migrants and a chorus of romantic wood frogs!

Annual Audubon Bird Walk on the Hay Flats

Join the Annual Audubon Bird Walk on the Hay Flats, from the Cottonwood Creek Wetlands Trailhead (Fairview Loop to Hayfield Road to Trailhead Road).

This is the springtime spectacular for bird migration on the Palmer Hay Flats. Flocks of snow geese and swans in the thousands stop to rest and feed as they pass through on their way north. So, contact Anchorage Audubon online or 907-338-BIRD (2473) to join up for this great birding day!

An remember, the annual gathering of Alaskan's for Palmer Hay Flats' members and supporters immediately follows and is only a 10 minute drive.

Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats will present a slide program, "Destination Palmer Hay Flats: A Visitor's Gem" to Alaska's Mat-Su Bed & Breakfast Association.

Winter Family Fun Day

Come and enjoy winter at beautiful Reflections Lake on the Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge! Cross-country ski, snowshoe, ice skate, or walk the circular path around the lake. Skis and snowshoes for adults & kids will be provided by R.E.I., and skates by Mat-Su Borough Parks & Recreation. Assistance & instruction will be available for everyone.

Warming fires, hot cocoa, treats & coffee will keep you toasty as we revel in the beauty of this picturesque lake. What a wonderful place to enjoy the great Alaskan outdoors! Sponsored by Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge.

Kris Abshire of Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats, will be at Mat-Su Visitors Center on Friday, July 20, 2007 from 2 to 4 pm to answer questions and inform visitors about Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge. Bring your summer visitors and learn about the history and wildlife of this 24,000 acre refuge out our back door.

Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge Question & Answer Period

The Palmer Soil & Water Conservation District office is sponsoring a mid-day Road Rally to learn about important elements of conservation that make up a healthy community. Last stop will be an informative talk about birds and their habitat, presented by Alaskans for Palmer Hay Flats and Mat-Su Birders, at Reflections Lake on Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge.
